Have you been through a terrible experience that you thought would never end? You couldn't fix it; you just had to go through it. As my dear friend Lanny Horton used to say, "The only way out is through." Years later you remember that time and realize that God helped you to get through it. I’ve been through several of these experiences in my life and I expect I’ll have to go through several more. When God takes us through these situations, they can be faith-builders...if we'll let them. Today's passage can help us to better face life's storms, so let's listen to it:
Sing to the Lord, all you godly ones! Praise his holy name. For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may spend the night, but joy comes with the morning. (Psalm 30:4-6)
Today's passage begins with this good advice: "Sing to the Lord, all you godly ones! Praise his holy name." And why should we do this? The psalmist continues, "For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime!" Then he says, "Weeping may spend the night, but joy comes with the morning." I like it! Other versions say, "Weeping may endure for the night," or "Weeping may tarry for the night," or "Weeping may last through the night," but I like today's version of this passage. When you have an unpleasant house guest who’s spending the night, you might comfort yourself that they'll be leaving come morning. So it is with most of the bad situations in which we find ourselves. Sometimes the situations are simply unavoidable events that happen to us, other times, they may be trouble of our own making. Regardless, today's passage reminds us that this unwelcome situation, even God’s anger, won't last forever. In contrast, God's favor and faithfulness will last a lifetime.
I encourage you, take time today to thank God for the mornings. Trouble may be spending the night at your house but morning is coming...and that is very Good News!
