How do you think about Jesus? Do you picture Him as a European man with white skin, long hair, in a robe and sandals, walking around and telling people to be nice to each other? Many people see Jesus this way. In fact, that was the way I was taught to picture Him when I was growing up in church. We don't have many physical descriptions of Jesus in the Bible but in today's passage, we have a clear physical description of how He looked the day when He appeared to His aged disciple John. Let's listen to it:
When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands. And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire. His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead. (Rev. 1:12-16)
In the verses preceding today passage, we learn that John was in exile on an island called Patmos for preaching the Word of God, and for giving His testimony about Jesus. And while he was worshiping in the Spirit, he heard a loud voice telling him to write things down. He turned around to face Jesus. Today's passage describes the Jesus he saw. Jesus wore a long robe with a gold sash; His head and hair were glowing white, His eyes looked like fire; His feet shone like bronze; His voice sounded like waves crashing on the beach. And His face was so bright it was shining like the sun and a sharp two-edged sword was sticking out of His mouth. How did John react to this image? He writes, "When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead." Wow. Before this visitation, John may have been picturing his friend Jesus the way He remembered Him. Now, John was seeing Jesus in His glory—or as much of His glory as Jesus thought it safe to reveal.
I'll ask you the question I began with: How do you think about Jesus? He's not a baby in a manger. He's not the guy in The Chosen streaming series. He's the most powerful, dangerous and loving Person in the Universe. Worship Him, today!
