I sometimes hear people say that the Bible is just a book written a long time ago. They say they’re not interested in reading it because they are not religious. For the most part, people who say this have never read a Bible. This is unfortunate because the Bible has a lot to say to us in these troubling times. Our passage today is a great example. Let’s listen to it together:
Many are asking, “Who can show us anything good?” Let the light of your face shine on us, Lord. You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and new wine abound. (Psalm 4:6–7)
What do you think about that? Let me read it again: “Many are asking, ‘Who can show us anything good?’” In our day, many people are asking that very question. We are disillusioned with politics and political leaders. We look to movie stars for moral guidance. We get opposing views of the world based on where we get our information. Who can we trust? The psalmist answers this question: “Let the light of your face shine on us, Lord. You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and new wine abound.” All earthly leaders are untrustworthy but in contrast to them, the Lord is always good. He is the source of all goodness. When His light shines on people and situations it chases away the darkness and puts joy into our hearts and lives. Interestingly, the psalmist contrasts worldly prosperity with satisfaction found only in God. There’s a kind of happiness that comes when we are doing well financially. We think we have security…but that’s false security. The light that comes from God’s Presence in our lives is the only real security we can ever experience in this life. Today, you may be discouraged with all of the uncertainty in the world. You may even be asking, “Who will show us any good?” Here’s your answer: Jesus. If you surrender your life to Him, Jesus will show you how to have a good life.
Jesus is always the answer…He is the really Good News!
