During my early twenties there was a movement called the Jesus People Movement and one of the catch phrases was "One Way – Jesus." We live in an age in which most people believe there are many paths to God. You might even believe that yourself...but that's not what the Bible teaches. Does that seem small minded or intolerant? Suppose you wanted to call me on the phone but you had one number wrong. You wouldn't be able to reach me because one number was not correct. You may have had all of the other nine numbers correct but if they are not all correct and in the right order, the call doesn't reach me. I wanted you to call me; I even gave you the right number in the right order; but if you used a different number, you won't get through. That reminds me of today's passage so let's listen to it together:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:1-10)
In this passage, sometimes referred to as the "Good Shepherd Passage," Jesus makes an important point with His disciples. He uses a figure of speech, describing His followers as sheep and presents Himself as a Shepherd who cares for them. But they don't get it, so He has to explain it and in His explanation, He added emphasis, He uses a phrase twice. Did you catch it? Let's listen to it again: "I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door." Twice, Jesus says He is the door. He isn't one of many doors, He is the only door. He follows this by saying, "If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Jesus wants you and me to have abundant life and He has made a way for us to have it. Anyone who says he has another way is sending you by an illegitimate way.
There is only one Door. One Way. One Name by which we may be saved. His name is Jesus...and that's such very Good News!
“Christmas means that, through the grace of God and the incarnation, peace with God is available; and if you make peace with God, then you can go out and make peace with everybody else. And the more people who embrace the gospel and do that, the better off the world is. Christmas, therefore, means the increase of peace—both with God and between people—across the face of the world.”
