The denomination in which I grew up had a strong emphasis on doctrine and knowing the Bible. They stressed knowing about Jesus and God the Father but rarely spent any real time teaching us about the Holy Spirit or, in the translation we all read back then, the Holy Ghost. We did learn that the Holy Ghost was the third Person of the Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. As a kid, I always thought it a bit unfair that the Holy Spirit came in third place! Today, let's take a moment to consider the Holy Spirit as we listen to a short Scripture from Romans 8:
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. (Romans 8:14)
In today's passage we heard something important about the Holy Spirit. Let's listen again: "For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God." These words should speak to each of us. If I’m a child of God, I should be led led by the Spirit. How about you? Are we being led by the Spirit? JI Packer once wrote a sweet little book entitled, Keep in Step with the Spirit. In our day there are many ways people wrongly emphasize the work of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit wasn't sent to give us chills or goose bumps. The Spirit was sent for a greater purpose: to empower us to live in a way that pleases our Heavenly Father. John 16:13 says the Holy Spirit is our Guide into the truth about Jesus, and that He instructs us in all of life's situations. If you are listening today, you probably love the Father and the Son, but are you being led by the Spirit? How does the Holy Spirit affect the way you deal with people and situations? The Holy Spirit wants to help you today...and that is very Good News!
In Christ's resurrection, we see the triumph of God's grace over the forces of evil, and the hope of eternal life for all who believe in Him.
