Many years ago I heard a man speak about a problem he was having with a member of his congregation. He had tried to resolve it but just couldn't get the issue sorted out. He was standing in his driveway complaining to God about it and said, "God, I know You could solve this thing in a minute! Why don't you?" The answer came to him immediately." God said, "If I did solve it, you wouldn't be talking to me that much!" How about you? How often do you talk to God? When do you do it? In today's brief passage, the psalmist gives us a bit of insight into his own chats with God. Let's listen in:

"In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; early in the morning I make my appeal and watch for you." (Psalm 5:3)

I once had a fascinating—and a little bit uncomfortable—conversation with a man I deeply respected about how he sensed God's Presence. I don't know that I've ever had another conversation like that because it was so deeply personal. The late JI Packer once said that he never answered questions about how he prayed. He said, "I never talk about it because it's a little like answering questions about how I make love to my wife." It's not secret—it’s personal. This passage tells us a little bit more about how King David related to God. He goes to God in the morning. That's his custom; in fact, he says it twice. “You hear my voice, early in the morning I make my appeal.” And then David watches for how God might answer his prayer. So let me ask: does God ever hear your voice in the morning? And then, do you ever listen to hear what He might say to you? I often talk to God in the morning, just before my bare feet hit the floor, before all of the other noise of the day crowds in. I encourage you to try it. God wants to know that you want to talk to Him. He has some things to say to you—and to me—and He often waits until we're listening...and that is very Good News!
