Do you ever have trouble just being a Christian? I’ve met many people over the years who struggle daily with this. They don’t know if they can hang on for even one more day. Some wrestled with drug addiction, abuse or alcoholism. For them, the struggle was real—they wrestled with their faith. While I have not battled with addiction issues, I too have wrestled with my faith. To some degree, we all must wrestle with our faith in order to own it. Having said that, faith is not something we can “get”...it’s something God gives. Today, let’s look at an interesting passage that can help us to see our faith differently:

The LORD directs the steps of the godly.  He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the LORD holds them by the hand. (Psa. 37:23-24)

In today’s passage, David is looking at life with God in a different way than you and I often experience. David is running for his life, battling his enemies, lamenting over some betrayal. For David trouble was starkly real. His enemies weren’t metaphors for the everyday difficulties of life—his enemies were really trying to kill him! David is giving us a look at grace. You and I tend to think of grace as forgiveness from sin but grace is so much more than that! David says that God directs the steps of the godly. God has a way in mind for us and He gives us the grace to walk that way. Then the psalmist says something that you and I need to hear in this day of making it on our own: “Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the LORD holds them by the hand.” Do you sometimes struggle because you think you might let go of God?

Well, today is a good day to rejoice! We can’t let go of God because He is holding onto us. It’s not us, holding onto God’s hand but God, who is holding onto our hands. Whatever happens, God won’t let go of us. That’s grace...and that is very Good News!
